<B>1860-O $20 AU53 PCGS.</B></I> A virtual match to the 1859-O double eagle in AU50 certified by PCGS in the present sale, although with surfaces that are even more distraction-free. With a mintage of only 6,600 pieces, the 1860-O is the "fourth- or fifth-rarest New Orleans double eagle," according to the Garrett-Guth <I>Gold Encyclopedia.</B></I> Like the 1859-O, this specimen also shows considerable prooflikeness around the peripheries of both sides. The admirable surface qualities, along with the noteworthy lack of mentionable impairments and a superb strike, at first glance make the coin appear to be a presentation piece, although it is clearly a circulation issue. The coloration is a delightful peach-gold throughout, and the strike is bold. Only seven times previously in the past dozen-plus years has Heritage offered an example of this issue in a higher grade. Certified in a PCGS old green-label holder.
