1860-O $20 AU50 PCGS. The 1860-O is a rare and often overlooked double eagle. Only 6,600 pieces were struck and probably no more than 80-90 coins are extant today in all grades. Better struck than most examples, this piece only shows noticeable weakness on the stars on the left side of the obverse. Bright orange-gold coloration with noticeable bits of luster surrounding the devices. A few light marks are scattered over each side; however, for pedigree purposes the most important may be a shallow planchet flaw above the point of the truncation of the neck of Liberty. The # 5 coin on Doug Winter's 1992 Condition Census mentions "a planchet flaw at the point of the truncation," which leads one to speculate that this may be the same coin. While more than 50 coins have been certified in the various grades of AU by the leading grading services, to date none have been certified in mint condition (1/06).
