1860<H10C> Transitional MS65 NGC. Judd-267.The 1860 "Transitional" half dime is reportedly a creation of Mint Director James Ross Snowden. These were fantasy pieces created at a time when Snowden was interested in swapping such pieces de caprice for Washington medals and other coins missing from the Mint Collection of coins and medals. This creation is the so-called "Coin Without a Country" that marries the old With Stars obverse with the new reverse adopted in 1860. Thus, this combination produced a coin with no mention of the United States as the issuing authority. This is a brilliant example with swirling mint luster and striations in the fields that give the coin a semi-reflective appearance. Weakly struck over the devices on each side, the diagnostic die scratch to the left of the rock is obvious without magnification. Census: 14 in 65, 11 finer (9/06).
