1860<H10C> Transitional MS60 ANACS. Breen-3097, Judd-267, Pollock-315, R.4. The transitional half dimes of 1859 and 1860 combine the Stars obverse design with the Agricultural or Cereal Wreath reverse design, and lack any identification of the country of origin. These are generally classified as pattern coins, not intended for circulation, although they are usually collected by advanced specialists as part of the regular Liberty Seated Half Dime series. There has been some discussion that the transitional half dime and dime issues of 1859 and 1860 may have been restrikes produced in the very late 1860s, or perhaps even later. While, this is certainly a possibility, in absence of documentation to this effect, these discussions are moot. Given that the obverse is clearly from the modified hub of Anthony Paquet, and has the hollow stars, slender arm, and other modifications, a strong case could be made for these being actual transitional pieces of 1859 and 1860. The mintage of this figure is generally considered to be 100 pieces, all business strikes, however, the surviving population clearly suggests a higher figure.
This light silvery gray example, with prooflike surfaces and pale gold toning at the borders, is typical of nearly all survivors with weakness along the right side of the obverse and at the lower center of the reverse. The stars to the right and the ribbon bow at the bottom of the reverse are weakly defined. Artifacts of additional metal are seen around the 8 and 6 in the date, possibly representing some type of unidentified recutting. As on all known examples, a diagonal die scratch connects the left base of the rock below Liberty to the border.
Ex: Stack's Auction (4/1985).
From The William A.
