1860 H10C PR67 NGC. In 1860, the Mint introduced a modified version of the Seated Liberty motif for the Half Dime. The representation of Liberty was lightly refined on the obverse and, most importantly for that side, the 13 stars around the periphery yielded to the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the reverse, a wreath of cereals replaced the laurel wreath. Proofs of this new type were produced to the extent of 1,000 pieces in 1860. While survivors are not rare in an absolute sense, they are prized among collectors for first-year proof type purposes. In addition, this issue has a low certified population at the PR67 level. NGC and PCGS report just six coins in this grade, and none finer (1/03). This is a richly toned specimen with dominant antique-copper shadings that are backlit by champagne and green-gold iridescence. The upper left obverse is lighter in appearance with a champagne-gray sheen. Brilliant in finish with a pleasingly sharp strike. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
