1860 G$1 PR65 PCGS
1860 G$1 PR65 PCGS. It was only the year before, in 1859, that the Mint began the regular process of recording--or at least, reporting a mintage figure--for proof coinage. Those early figures are notoriously unreliable, however, for various reasons. Any proof gold coin represented a considerable outlay of money for the average worker back in "those days," and when hard times befell, often those proof gold coins began to look like food on the table. The reported mintage of the 1860 proof gold dollar is 154 pieces, but in PR65 this piece is one of only 10 so certified at NGC and PCGS combined, with four pieces finer, some of them with Cameo or Deep/Ultra Cameo surfaces.
This is a splendid Gem example that has deeply mirrored fields on each side. The color is noteworthy as well, with deep reddish overall and a tinge of lilac on the cheek of Liberty. The devices display a noticeable amount of mint frost that gives the coin a definite, but unacknowledged contrast between the fields and devices.

Coin Engraver: James B.
