Double Eagles 1860-o PCGS graded About Uncirculated 53. Prooflike, with much reflectivity remaining in protected areas around the lettering and devices. Surfaces exhibit minor handling and scuffs, but there are no serious or detracting contact marks. It is truly an amazing example. The 1860-O double eagle is among the great rarities of the series, boasting a tiny mintage of 6,600 pieces at a most precarious time in the history of America's south. Of course, all went into commerce. In fact, no grading service has assigned a Mint State classification to a single example. Period! Today, perhaps 90, or so, specimens exist at all grade levels, and of those, only a handful achieve one of the four distinct About Uncirculated classifications. To date, PCGS has graded just ten at this level, and a scant five pieces higher. Demand for rare date gold is strong and the collector base for Liberty Head double eagles in particular has never been greater. This exceptionally nice prooflike "60-O" is a monumental offering, sure to elicit the excitement of specialists in the series. And once sold, it may be years before its equal becomes available.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
