1860-D G$1 MS62 PCGS.
1860-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 12-P. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Very small date as on Philadelphia and San Francisco gold dollars of this year.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1860-D is the fifth rarest of thirteen issues in this series. Around 100 pieces are known with three-quarters of these in the Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated range. Half a dozen or so exist in Uncirculated, including a single piece graded MS63 by PCGS and three graded MS62 by PCGS.STRIKE: The 1860-D has the reputation of being the worst struck gold dollar from the Dahlonega mint. This example, while certainly not boldly detailed, is actually quite a bit better struck than usually seen. The U in UNITED is, as on all known pieces, very weak but the rest of the obverse shows acceptable detail including full denticles from 11 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The reverse is not as well struck with weakness at the left border and the bottom of the right side of the wreath. The 1 and the 0 in the date are full and the mintmark is sharp.SURFACES: The surfaces appear to be mostly very clean with some hairlines (not from cleaning) visible below light magnification. There are no mint-made surface imperfections, as seen on many 1860-D gold dollars. In fact, this is one of the best planchets seen on an example of this date.LUSTER: The luster is grainy in texture and appears to be slightly reflective. Some minor haziness on the surfaces slightly obscures the luster and if removed the luster would be more intense.COLORATION: Deep yellow-gold color can be seen on both sides.EYE APPEAL: There are not many 1860-D gold dollars that have much in the way of eye appeal. This coin is considerably more pleasing than usual with an uncommonly good strike, very clean surfaces, and what appears to be bold luster below a slight degree of haziness.COMPARABLES: We are not aware of another PCGS MS62 1860-D gold dollar that has been offered at public auction. Some recently sold PCGS MS61 examples include our 1999 ANA: 7634 coin that brought $17,250 and the Bass II: 138 example that realized $19,550 in October 1999.PEDIGREE: Obtained via private treaty from Heritage Rare Coin Galleries in October 1998. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Doug Winter's book on Dahlonega gold coinage and it is listed in the revised Condition Census as tied with one other piece as the second finest known. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
