1860-D $5 XF45 PCGS. Medium D. Winter 31-X, the only known dies. 1860 is the penultimate year in which Liberty Half Eagles were produced in the Dahlonega Mint. Perhaps surprisingly for an issue with just 14,635 pieces produced, the '60-D ranks "only" 17th in overall rarity among D-mint Fives. One of 130-140 pieces believed extant (per Winter, 1997), this Choice XF survivor is well defined for the grade over all areas save for the upper and lower portions of the reverse eagle. Somewhat scuffy from circulation, yet free of singularly mentionable blemishes, this green-gold coin retains modest hints of the original finish in some of the more protected areas around the devices. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
