1860-D $5 Medium D MS61 PCGS. Variety 38-FF. Even as the nation continued inexorably toward the Civil War, the business of the Dahlonega Mint continued, and the small-town operation produced what it could. For the highest denomination it struck, the half eagle, Dahlonega produced 14,635 pieces in 1860. Just a year later, that Mint would close under Confederate control, never to produce another coin.
While Liberty's hair displays a touch of softness on the curl below the ear, a common trait for the issue, the remainder of the coin is surprisingly sharp, particularly the often-weak legs of the eagle. The surfaces have pleasing, slightly frosty luster, and the lemon-gold fields have a touch of green. Lightly abraded overall, yet the coin's visual appeal is superior to that of most examples. As with most Dahlonega issues, the populations listed by the grading services are inflated by resubmissions. Population: 7 in 61, 7 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
