1860-D $5 Medium D MS60 NGC. Variety 38-FF. The pre-Civil War mintage of this piece was a fairly typical total for the times, of 14,635 business strikes, a bit on the low side but not overly so. But time and attrition, as well as the constant need for circulating gold in the South, led to the situation where the typical survivor of this issue grades only XF or AU at best. This is a more attractive coin both in terms of strike and contact marks than might be imagined from the grade. There are no individually distracting abrasions, and the strike is bold save for a touch of softness on the lovelock and the eagle's neck. The luster is fairly subdued, however, and some cloudiness is noted in the left obverse and right reverse fields. Census: 4 in 60, 10 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
