1860-D $5 MS61 PCGS.
1860-D $5 MS61 PCGS. Medium mintmark. Variety 38-FF. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). This is the only medium mintmark variety known for this date. A large mintmark variety (38-EE) is known and it is far rarer.RARITY INFORMATION: Of the 14,635 examples originally produced, around 145 to 165 are known today. This includes 38-42 in AU grades and six or seven in Uncirculated. The finest known 1860-D half eagle is the Duke's Creek/Milas/Bareford coin that is graded MS64 and which brought $49,500 in Stack's May 1995 sale. We know of four other coins that have been graded MS62 by PCGS, an NGC MS62, and one or two PCGS MS61 coins.STRIKE: The obverse is a bit concave in appearance, as typically seen on this date. The obverse rim appears quite a bit higher than fields. Some weakness can be seen on the hair curls and on the curl below the ear. The reverse is very sharp and has less of a concave appearance.SURFACES: Most 1860-D half eagles have very heavily abraded surfaces. The Green Pond Collection coin shows some scattered marks in the fields, which are acceptable for the assigned grade. There are no mint-made grease stains as seen on many examples.LUSTER: The luster is excellent with a very frosty texture. There are some minor breaks in the obverse fields while the reverse is choice. The luster is original and has not been tampered with.COLORATION: Both sides have pleasing light to medium yellow-gold color with a slight tinge of green. This color is original. Very few 1860-D half eagles exist that show natural color and these are considered very desirable by specialists.EYE APPEAL: This is a solid, strictly Uncirculated example with full luster, good detail and pleasing coloration. Unlike many branch mint gold coins that have been graded MS61 by the major third-party services, this coin is unquestionably "new." COMPARABLES: In our January 2003 auction of the Ashland City Collection, we sold a PCGS MS62 example as lot 4808 for $21,850. In the October 1999 Bowers and Merena Bass II Auction, a PCGS MS62 example, offered as lot 1125, brought $23,000.PEDIGREE: Obtained privately from Doug Winter in September 1997. This is the plate coin in the second edition of the Winter book on Dahlonega gold. It is listed in the current Condition census as being tied with a few other coins as the fourth finest 1860-D half eagle. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
