1860 Cavalry sword in relic condition, U.S. inspected and dated 1865. Guard broken and heavily rusted with affidavit attesting to recovery at the Custer battlefield. A notarized affidavit signed Shirley Loudy Powell states that she grew up in Billings, MT, and often drove to Hardin MT, which is in the Crow Indian Reservation. These outings were in the years 1933-1934 and she tells of roaming on the battlefield and the fact that her mother and father became friends with a Crow Indian Chief who presented her with a U.S. Cavalry sword from the Little Big Horn battle. In turn, her father gave the Chief a gold watch and chain from their jewelry store in Billings. An original family photograph of Shirley, her mother and father, other siblings, and Indian children is included. The Chief is at the center wearing his regalia and holding a rifle. The sword has a piece of uniform material wrapped around the inside of the pommel which was used to tighten the now missing wood grip. The material fragment is the exact color of Cavalry trooper’s britches. A very interesting artifact which could be further researched as to the Crow Chief’s identity and to the Loudy family jewelry store in Billings. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
