1860-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Typically struck for the date, the obverse displays much better detail than the reverse. On this piece, the obverse shows good overall detail with some minor weakness seen on the high spots. There are light ticks in the fields seen on both sides; none of these is major or detracting. The luster is frosty with some minor breaks in the fields, as one would expect on a coin graded AU58. The color is a light to medium orange-gold. The overall level of eye appeal for this piece is acceptable for the grade and it is certainly an above average example of the second-to-last half eagle produced at the Charlotte mint.
An estimated 150-175 pieces are known and this date ranks right in the middle of the half eagles from this mint in terms of high grade and overall rarity. Most 1860-C half eagles are found in VF and XF and properly graded AUs are quite scarce with three dozen or so known. In Uncirculated there appear to be around six to eight known led by a single MS64 graded by NGC.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
