1860-C $5 AU58 NGC. Winter 29-M. This is a far scarcer variety with only a dozen or so pieces known. It may be that this variety is an early die state of 28-M with the double punching fading on later strikes. Only 14,813 pieces were produced of this issue, but it is not quite as scarce as one might imagine from the mintage. AU and Uncirculated examples are far from plentiful but the persistent collector should be able to snag a low-end C.C. example without too much difficulty. This piece is well defined in the center of the obverse with slight softness on the peripheral stars. The reverse is weakly detailed on the eagle's plumage, as always, since this issue was struck from the same reverse die as the 1859-C. Each side has taken on a lovely overlay of reddish patina and the fields are nicely mirrored. A number of field marks are scattered over each side with no more than the usual number on the face of Liberty (which is often found heavily abraded). From the Ashland City Collection.
