1860-C $5 AU50 PCGS.
1860-C $5 AU50 PCGS.<p>The 1860-C boasts the lowest mintage of any C-mint Half Eagle produced after 1846 with the notable exception of the final-year 1861-C. Only 46,813 pieces were delivered, with just 110-210 coins believed extant in all grades. When offered at all, the '60-C is apt to grade no finer than XF, and Winter estimates that no more than 18 coins have survived in AU. This important example displays dominant olive-gold color with streaks of brighter tinting radiating out from the center of the reverse. Struck with the same reverse die as the 1859-C, the 1860-C is similar to that issue in overall striking quality. The obverse of this example is sufficiently bold, the reverse is more softly detailed with noticeable die rust (as produced) on the eagle's portrait. Moderately abraded, yet no more so that one should expect for a circulated Half Eagle from this southern branch mint. From the Peter Martinez Collection.
