1860 50C PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. This coin is an example of Tail Hub Variety II, which is identifiable by the relatively wide spacing between the tops of the letters L and F in the denomination HALF DOL. (On Seated Half Dollars of Tail Hub Variety I, the tops of these two letters are nearly joined.) Whereas some business strike 1860 Seated Halves are of Tail Hub Variety I, all of the proofs appear to have been made from dies sunk from Tail Hub Variety II. A total of 1,000 specimen strikings were made in 1860, but only 525 examples were actually sold. The balance of the coins were melted, and, in today's market, the proof 1860 Seated Half is more challenging to locate than its similarly dated Seated Quarter counterpart. This is a Condition Census Gem with warm dove-gray toning on the reverse that yields to champagne and blue-gray undertones. The obverse is even more colorful with rich gold and sea-green target toning around a crimson-russet center. Impressively full, the devices are equally as pristine as the smooth fields. Both major grading services report just eight coins in PR66, with a mere two finer (11/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
