1860 $5 Mormon Five Dollar AU58 PCGS. K-6, High R.5. The 1860 Half Eagle is undoubtedly the most famous and widely recognized of the six Mormon issues. After the cool reception the 1849 and 1850 pieces received, Mormon officials suspended any further coinage after 1851. However, after gold was discovered in Colorado in 1860, Brigham Young once again renewed the Mormon church's interest in gold coin production. The obverse features a reclining Lion of Judah in the center with the peripheral legends that translate from the Deseret alphabet roughly as: HOLINESS TO THE LORD. The reverse shows an eagle with a beehive in the center of its breast with the outer legends reading: DESERET ASSAY OFFICE PURE GOLD 5D. Although all of these coins bear the date 1860, 202 specimens were delivered between July 27 and December 12, 1859, while the remaining 587 pieces emerged from the presses between January 14, 1860 and March 8, 1861. Despite their significantly improved design and striking quality, these Half Eagles failed as a circulating medium just as their predecessors had, and by March 1862, enough federal coinage had reached the Utah area to render further Mormon coinage unnecessary. While many specimens of this variety are available in high grade, they are always popular with collectors; in fact, they are among the most popular of all territorial gold coins. This is an especially attractive example that has bright green-gold coloration and significant portions of mint luster remaining with just the barest friction over the highpoints of the design. Sharply struck throughout, each side shows numerous small abrasions but the only ones worthy of mention are a couple in the obverse field to the right of the lion's head.
