1860 $5 Mormon Five Dollar AU58 NGC. The Mormon's
1860<$5> Mormon Five Dollar AU58 NGC. The Mormon's final coins were struck using Colorado gold, which was found to be around .917 gold with the balance being natural alloys (primarily silver). The obverse depicts the Lion of Judah, which symbolizes God's power and mercy while the reverse displays a beehive protected by an eagle with outstretched wings. The Deseret alphabet is used to state HOLINESS TO THE LORD on the obverse, with the date 1860 below, and the reverse states DESERET ASSAY OFFICE PURE GOLD and 5 D. below. In the eagle's sinister (left) claw a clutch of arrows are found, and in the dexter (right) claw is a branch (likely an olive branch) with five leaves and three berries. All devices are well struck for this issue, and we note traces of luster in the protected areas. The surfaces show scattered handling nicks from brief circulation, and the coin is a pleasing medium yellow-gold color on the obverse and reverse. Traces of a die line or crack are found below the 1 in the date extending up to the base of that digit. Perhaps 100-150 are known, and this coin is probably just about in the top ten percent of those for its superlative condition. An important Territorial issue that boasts rarity, condition and beautifully rendered devices.
