1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS64 PCGS. K-2, R.4. The predecessor to the Denver Mint began several decades earlier when Austin M. Clark, Milton Edward Clark, and Emmanuel H. Gruber formed the firm of Clark, Gruber & Company and began a banking business in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Clark brothers were originally grocers who profited from selling their merchandise and goods to prospective miners. With all the news of gold discoveries around Denver City, a banking office was soon opened there and attention eventually turned to converting the gold dust they purchased from their new venture into coin. The firm erected a two-story brick building at (present-day) 16th and Market Streets, about one mile from the current site of the Denver Mint and a private mint was opened in 1860. While having a lasting impact on the fledgling territory, coinage operations lasted for just two years.
The central motifs of the Clark, Gruber & Co. five dollar are similar to the federal design except that Clark & Co. replaces LIBERTY on her headband. In addition to the denomination, the legend PIKES PEAK GOLD DENVER appears on the reverse. Only a handful of Choice and finer examples are believed to survive of the first year half eagle. Struck from native ore, these 1860 issues tended to become easily abraded, but such is not the case with this outstanding example. Only the normal weakness is seen over the central devices and a thin veil of reddish-orange patina accents each side. Population: 2 in 64, 2 finer (11/06).
