1860<$5> Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS63 NGC. K-2, R.4. Nicely struck for the issue, with characteristic yellow-gold color and only a few insignificant field marks. A paper-thin luster graze down Liberty's neck is all that precludes this attractive piece from an even higher grade. The predecessor to the Denver Mint, Clark, Gruber & Co. serviced the Colorado Gold Rush with deliveries of Quarter Eagles, Half Eagles, Eagles, and Double Eagles in 1860 and 1861. In the initial year of production, coins were struck from unalloyed native gold, but were found to abrade too easily and in 1861 copper was added to harden the alloy.
