1860<$5> Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS61 NGC. Kagin-2, R.4. Clark, Gruber and Co. began operations in Leavenworth, Kansas, and eventually formed a banking office in Denver, after which they started producing gold coins as a service to miners and citizens of the area. Eventually, the firm's operation evolved into the United States Mint at Denver. This example is very similar to the coin we sold in our February Long Beach sale, but it is not the same coin. Judging from the photo of that piece, which was graded the same, the present example appears to be slightly the finer of these two coins. This is a fully lustrous Mint State example with slight weakness at the center on both sides, as usually seen. The surfaces are exceptional for the grade, with only the slightest of abrasions. Struck in bright green-gold, and retaining a high degree of eye appeal. Listed on page 309 of the 2005 Guide Book.
