1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS61 NGC. K-2, R.4. The Leavenworth, Kansas firm of Clark, Gruber and Co. established a banking office in Denver, and from that beginning they started producing gold coins as a convenience to the miners and the local citizens who came to trust their work. The work of this firm eventually became the groundwork or the basis for the United States Mint in Denver that finally opened its doors for business nearly half a century later. This is a lovely example of their handiwork with greenish-gold coloration and reflective surfaces. The central obverse and reverse are slightly weak in appearance, as nearly always. A few faint hairlines and blemishes do not take away from the excellent eye appeal.
