1860<$5> Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS60 NGC. K-2, R.4. The Leavenworth, Kansas firm of Clark, Gruber and Co. established a banking office in Denver, and from that beginning they started producing gold coins as a convenience to the miners and the local citizens who came to trust their work. The work of this firm eventually became the groundwork or the basis for the United States Mint in Denver that finally commenced coinage nearly half a century later. The present greenish-gold Five Dollar gold piece has extensive luster, and the strike is good despite the relatively high relief of the well executed portrait. Some wispy marks along the obverse border and on the reverse field limit the grade but do not reduce the naked eye appeal. Listed on page 309 of the 2005 Guide Book.
