1860<$3> MS63 PCGS. This date is scarce in all grades and extremely difficult to locate in Mint State grades. Like nearly all surviving Mint State examples of this issue, the surfaces have frosty and brilliant yellow-gold luster and the design elements are sharply detailed. In addition to 7,036 business strikes that were coined in January 1860, the Philadelphia Mint produced 119 proofs, which were actually coined after the business strikes. According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, this is the reason that business strikes are virtually never found with prooflike surfaces. This example has excellent eye appeal created by a hint of pale orange toning. The surfaces have a few tiny patches of microscopic roughness and minor hairlines. Population: 10 in 63, 13 finer (7/06).
