1860 $3 AU55 PCGS. One of just 7,155 pieces produced, this green-gold coin is a lightly worn survivor that retains an overall bold appearance. Some of the original finish is still in evidence, and the wispy circulation marks are well within the confines of the Choice AU grade level. This is an immensely important coin in that it displays a partial G. WILSON countermark on the obverse. This feature is most clearly seen when one rotates the coin so that the IC in AMERICA is at 9 o'clock. The punch was held at an angle with the result that only part of the G. WILS is evident. In the book American and Canadian Countermarked Coins (1987), Gregory G. Brunk lists this countermark as catalog # 43720 (p. 194). The author, however, was aware of only two small Cents with this countermark: an 1858 and an 1879. This countermarked Three Dollar gold piece is undoubtedly of the utmost rarity and should fetch a strong price from collectors who specialize in countermarked U.S. coinage. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
