1860<$20> AU58 NGC. Perhaps it is because examples are easily located in VF and XF grades that this date is considered common, but it is hardly easy to locate in attractive AU or finer grades, although several higher grade pieces made a recent appearance from the treasure of the S.S. Republic. There is no record of significant varieties for this date, although differences in the date position have been identified. For example, two different specimens in The Wyoming Collection have the dates in different positions relative to the bust and border. This example could best be described as a High Date variety with much less space between the top of the digit 1 and the bust truncation, and considerably more space between the bottom of the date and the border.
This example has a curious depression from the border to the neck truncation, through the bottom loop and upper right curve of the digit 8 in the date. This depression or trough appears to be a minor "struck-through" error, similar to a lint mark but much heavier. Both sides exhibit frosty mint luster with only a trace of wear. The surfaces have lovely yellow-gold color with considerable rose toning. The surfaces have light abrasions as usual for the early double eagles.
From The Wyoming Collection.
