1860 $2 1/2 Old Reverse, Type One MS64 PCGS. While the 1861 quarter eagle is common, the same cannot be said for the 1860, which has a much smaller production of only 22,675 pieces. Most examples of the 1860 feature the New Reverse, introduced in 1859. The differences are subtle to the inexperienced eye, but the upper two arrowheads touch on the Old Reverse. (Another way to easily spot the difference: With the naked eye, an arrowhead appears to nearly touch the bottom of the R in AMERICA.) The slender arrowheads of the New Reverse are clearly separated. At least one Old Reverse working die was retained, since rare examples struck in 1859, 1860, and 1861 are found with the Old Reverse. Although the Old Reverse 1859 and 1861 quarter eagles are scarce, the 1860 is the rarest issue with the obsolete reverse. As of (2/07), PCGS reports only 17 examples in all grades, and only eight of those pieces are certified as Mint State. At the MS64 level, this example is one of four coins so graded, with none finer. This near-Gem features rich peach-gold color and is devoid of detracting marks. The strike is crisply executed, and only the right (facing) claw lacks full definition. Population: 4 in 64, none finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
