1860 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle MS61 PCGS. K-1, R.4. The issues of Clark, Gruber, & Co. were highly respected by Colorado banking circles, and received little competition from other private miners. Other Colorado firms, John Parsons and J.J. Conway, produced private gold coins, but their emissions must have been small, since these are great rarities today. Typically, the coins of Clark, Gruber & Co. imitated their Federal counterparts, as is the case for Kagin-1. CLARK & CO. substitutes LIBERTY on the coronet, and PIKES PEAK GOLD DENVER replaces UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; these changes evade counterfeiting laws. The present honey-gold piece is softly struck in the centers, but elements near the borders are bold, and handling marks are relegated to the left obverse field, and the field above the eagle.
