1860 $10 Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar MS60 NGC. K-3, R.5. The Clark, Gruber gold coinage was produced in 1860 and 1861. Six out of eight issues were patterned after the federal gold coins, with a Liberty Head, 13 stars, and the date on the obverse, and with an eagle, denomination, and legend on the reverse. The other two issues, the 1860 $10 and $20 coins, had a triangular mountain on the obverse, said to be Pikes Peak but obviously not familiar to the engraver, who must have been from the East.
This is a pleasing Mint State piece with bright green-gold color and lighter yellow luster near the borders. The obverse has a raised ridge of metal from the D of GOLD, through the right base of the mountain, and down toward the rim at 5 o'clock. It is apparently a minor planchet lamination, but may have an associated die crack. Listed on page 362 of the 2007 Guide Book. Census: 6 in 60, 11 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
