1860<$10> Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU58 NGC. K-3, R.5. Labeled PIKE'S PEAK GOLD on the obverse, the origin of the gold from which these coins were struck is definitely from Colorado. However, one cannot escape the imaginative representation of Pike's Peak that was engraved into the obverse die by the staff of Bailey and Company, who had never seen the mountain. As with the California gold strike from a dozen years before, once news of gold in Colorado brought miners and camp followers to the gold fields of Colorado the need for conversion of raw bullion into coin form became immediate. The firm of Clark, Gruber stepped in to fill that need, and did so for two years until selling their firm and building to the United States as an Assay Office (later the Denver mint). This is a well struck example that shows just a trace of friction over the highpoints of the devices. Bright olive-gold coloration overall with a number of small handling marks peppered over each side. Very rare in such a superior state of preservation.
