1860<$10> Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU55 PCGS. K-3, R.5. After gold was discovered in Colorado, the firm of Clark, Gruber & Co. established a mint in Denver to provide coinage to the surrounding area. This entire area was originally part of the Kansas Territory, but eventually became Jefferson Territory, Colorado Territory, and finally, the State of Colorado. Denver was first named Denver City, in honor of John W. Denver, the governor of Kansas Territory. At the time these coins were minted in 1860, the region was still known as Jefferson Territory.
This is a pleasing green-gold example with considerable luster and only slight wear on the highest design points. The surfaces are accented by hints of orange color. Each side has limited abrasions and hairlines, consistent with the grade. A splendid example of the whimsically designed ten dollar gold piece that features an unusual, triangular mountain. Some have suggested the appearance of a volcano.
