1860 $10 Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU55 PCGS. K-3, R.5. The start of the Colorado Gold Rush followed that of California by almost exactly ten years. The stage was set for a local mint in Denver, and there to fill the void was Clark, Gruber, & Co. Coinage totaled approximately $120,000 between July and October of 1860. In 1863, the federal government purchased the facility, which served as a U.S. Assay Office prior to the erection of a Federal Mint in 1906.
1860 Clark, Gruber ten dollar pieces are rare in any grade. On the present example, the highpoints show only a trace of wear. A few scattered marks are present on each side, but none are individually distracting. The green-gold surfaces are clean, and retain ample luster. The "Pike's Peak" motif, and the fictitious rendering of the mountain, have made this piece popular among collectors for decades. This attractive example should inspire bidders, and will be a highly valued historic relic and numismatic treasure to its next owner.
