1860<$10> Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU55 PCGS. K-3, R.5. Clark, Gruber & Co. established a private mint in Denver, Colorado, to provide gold coinage to the surrounding area after the discovery of the precious metal in Colorado. In 1860, when this coin was minted, the area was still known as the Jefferson Territory. In 1863 the U.S. government bought the Clark, Gruber facility to turn it into a mint, but then Congress determined to use the building only as a U.S. Assay Office. It was not until 1906 that the former Clark, Gruber facility--in much remodeled form--finally became a branch mint of the United States.
This sparkling example has tons of luster and phenomenal surfaces, appearing much more like a late-19th century federal eagle than a mid-century Territorial gold piece. The color is a lovely sunset-orange with deeper rim hues, and there are remarkably few surface impairments. A beautiful and highly collectible example.
