1860 $1 State of Rhode Island Bank of American Banknote
This is an 1860-dated $1 banknote issued by the Bank of America, operating under the charter of the State of Rhode Island. Printed by the National Bank Note Company, New York, the note features detailed engravings characteristic of mid-19th century banknote artistry. The obverse side presents an array of engraved motifs. At the top center is an allegorical depiction of Lady Liberty seated on a throne. She is shown holding an olive branch in one hand, with maritime imagery in the background, including ships and a harbor scene - symbolic of commerce and navigation. To the right of the central motif is an eagle perched among agricultural tools and bales, reinforcing themes of industry and prosperity. The left and right corners are adorned with small, scalloped medallions, each enclosing the denomination "1" in the center and the words "ONE" repeated around the border. To the lower left of the note is a detailed portrait of a bearded man in formal attire, enclosed in an ornate frame. On the lower right is a vignette of a young woman holding a bundle of wheat, representing agriculture. The main text, "The Bank of America," is prominently overprinted in black, with "One Dollar" centered beneath in white over a green underprint featuring repeating circular "M" motifs. The reverse side of the note is blank, a common feature of banknotes from this era before the widespread use of double-sided printing.
