1859-S S$1 MS60 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint stru
1859-S<S$1> MS60 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint struck at least 100,000 Half Dollars every year between 1856 and 1877. However, emissions of Seated Dollars were much scarcer and smaller. The 1870-S is a landmark rarity, and the 1873-S is unknown despite a recorded mintage of 700 pieces. Thus, the only collectible S-mint issues of the design are the No Motto 1859-S and the Motto 1872-S. Both are rare, however, due to a combined production of only 29,000 pieces. Bowers (1993) postulates that between 750 and 1,250 1859-S Dollars exist in circulated grades, but only estimates about ten pieces in Mint State. The present older holder example, therefore, is of great importance to the dedicated specialist. Splashes of orange, aqua, and cream-gray color endow the lightly marked and moderately prooflike surfaces. The strike is not full on the eagle's neck or left (facing) leg, but is generally crisp. Population: 3 in 60, 12 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
