1859-S G$1 MS62 PCGS. In 1975, David Akers suggested that this issue is "possibly the most underrated date in high grade in the entire gold dollar series." In 1988, Walter Breen commented succinctly "prohibitively rare Uncirculated." And in 2006, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth wrote: "This date has long been overlooked for its true rarity. At the time of issue, the collecting of coins by mintmark was nonexistent. The small mintage was quickly circulated, with very few survivors. About Uncirculated examples of this date are seen with some regularity. The coins offered, however, are greatly underpriced at current levels, given the rarity of the issue. The most reasonable explanation for this is that there are fewer collectors of San Francisco Mint coinage than there are of the Southern mints."
The common theme seems to be that this issue is an important condition rarity in the gold dollar series, a date that is seldom encountered in higher grades. Given current market levels, the forward-looking collector may wish to consider the acquisition of this example. The green-gold surfaces of this example are fully brilliant and highly lustrous. Some wispy hairlines limit the grade, and a few darker toning spots identify this piece among its peers.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
