1859-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Like most of the early San Francisco gold issues, the 1859-S double eagle saw heavy circulation, and few survived unworn. Yet the total mintage of more than 636,000 pieces dwarfs the figures for both the Philadelphia and New Orleans issues for that year, and of the three, only the San Francisco double eagle is available in anything above minimal Mint State.
The key is available, not readily available, as such pieces are still condition rarities, especially in MS62. One such example, well struck and softly lustrous, is offered here. The apricot-gold surfaces are lightly abraded overall, and a slightly deeper mark affects the hair behind the coronet, but the overall visual appeal is high. Population: 15 in 62, 1 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
