1859-S<$20> AU58 NGC. Like many of its peers, this issue is readily available in circulated grades, such as VF and XF, but it is difficult to locate in AU grades. Mint State coins are nearly impossible to find. Even the treasure of the S.S. Republic yielded few such coins. The ideal grade for collectors is AU58, providing an excellent marriage of quality and price.
Varieties are known with a repunched date or with the obverse die doubled, visible especially on the coronet and letters of LIBERTY. This example is a normal dies variety with no unusual characteristics. The Wyoming Collection specimen is an excellent example with frosty yellow-gold luster and wonderful eye appeal that is created by pale rose toning within the devices. A trained eye is necessary to detect any wear on the highpoints. Although a few faint hairlines are evident, the surfaces are remarkable for a complete absence of abrasions. The Harry Bass Collection had four examples of this date, but none any finer than this specimen. The Dallas Bank Collection contained one example described as Uncirculated, but the photo suggests that that coin is also no finer than this example.
From The Wyoming Collection.
