1859-S $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. This lovely specimen is exceeded by a single MS65 coin certified by PCGS. Sharply struck save for slight weakness at the usual areas of the reverse including the eagle's neck and leg. The surfaces are fully brilliant with rich yellow-gold luster. David Akers described this issue as one of the real "sleepers" in the quarter eagle series. Those comments seem appropriate even today. Just 15,200 coins were minted, and possibly a couple hundred survive in all grades. The famous Harry Bass Collection included eight different examples of this issue, with just a single Mint State example that was certified by PCGS as MS61.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
