1859 S$1 PR64 ANACS. Somewhat mottled tan-gray toning overlays both sides with blushes of cobalt-blue color at the right peripheries. The strike is as sharp as one should expect for a proof Seated Dollar, and the surfaces do not reveal any mentionable hairlines or contact marks. The proof finish is subdued by the toning. Although federal records indicate that 800 proof Silver Dollars were produced in 1859, it is highly unlikely that all were distributed by year's end. Based on the number of coins extant, Bowers (1993) estimates that no more than 450 coins were actually sold. Those that were not were undoubtedly melted in the Mint. A rare issue that is always in demand among collectors who specialize in 19th century U.S. proof coinage. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
