1859 Pattern 50C. J-241 NGC PF65 CAM
1859 Pattern Half Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-241. Pollock-297. NGC graded PF65 CAM. The brilliant white luster is satiny and consistent on the devices (hence the "cameo") while swirling with mirror reflection in the all-brilliant, untoned fields. A well struck and lustrous Gem that has carefully preserved surfaces. This is a strongly struck example, with nice detail to all the important high points, and deserves a place in a top-of-the-line set of Pattern coins. The head is by James B. Longacre, whose steady hand and classical training as a die engraver, gives it a firm, balanced composition. The handsome Longacre "cereal wreath", described more fully in a footnote to an 1860 half dime in the sale, is comprised of cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, corn, wheat and oak leaves. This is the second design of a cereal wreath created by the Mint's chief engraver, 1844-69.
