1859<P1C> Indian Cent, Judd-228, Pollock-272, R.1, MS65 PCGS. The famous transitional cent with the design as adopted in 1860, but here dated 1859. These pieces were struck in both proof and business strike format. The 1859 patterns of this design have the oak wreath with shield design on the reverse, with the regular Indian cent obverse. Proofs of this issue are worth considerably more than the business strike pieces. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. This piece offers light tan-gold surfaces with glints of lilac and jade on each side, and a bold strike. The Judd pattern reference comments of this issue: "The transitional Indian Head cent (J-228) is a collector's favorite. Most known examples are in gem Mint State. Hundreds exist, but it is still several times rarer than an 1856 Flying Eagle cent, another transitional pattern. The good news is that, unlike the latter, the 1859 is not listed in A Guide Book of United States Coins. Otherwise, it would become so popular that it would cost tens of thousands of dollars!" (The 2007 Guide Book does list selected pattern varieties, but this pattern is not among them.)
