1859-O $10 AU50 PCGS. Winter (1992) regards the 1859-O as the premier rarity in the New Orleans Mint
1859-O $10 AU50 PCGS. Winter (1992) regards the 1859-O as the premier rarity in the New Orleans Mint Eagle series from both absolute and condition standpoints. Perhaps only 30-35 coins are extant from a paltry original mintage of 2,300 pieces, and most survivors grade either VF or XF. About Uncirculated examples number only 28 pieces at NGC and PCGS, and the five AU55 coins are the finest certified representatives of the issue (10/02). In a sale replete with branch mint gold rarities, we are sure that specialists will find this to be one of the most memorable lots. The obverse star centrils are mostly indistinct, but Liberty's portrait and the reverse eagle exhibit pleasingly bold definition for an O-mint Eagle from this era. Light wear is seen over the highpoints, and scattered abrasions pepper both sides. There is some of the original finish still in evidence, most notably in the protected areas around many of the reverse devices. Shallow scrapes in the lower right obverse field are noted for accuracy as well as pedigree concerns. We have not offered a similarly graded certified 1859-O Eagle in nearly five years. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
