1859-O $1 MS64 NGC. Well struck with surprisingly strong visual appeal for this New Orleans issue. Rich silver-gray patina predominates on each side, while the margins show attractive rose-gold, violet, and blue elements. A handful of light ticks are scattered in the fields, but the devices are attractively preserved. In his cataloging of this lot, David Akers noted that Choice examples are elusive, stating that the 1859-O is " ... a very scarce, if not moderately rare, issue ... " and that anything finer is "a major rarity with probably fewer than 10 total pieces known." The combined certified population shows just two Gems (12/07).
Ex: John Jay Pittman Sale Part Two, May 20-21, 1998, lot 1691.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
