(1859) Half Dollar Die Trial, Judd-A1859-2, Pollock-321
(1859) Half Dollar Die Trial, Judd-A1859-2, Pollock-3212, R.8, MS61 NGC. This is an unfinished uniface obverse die trial of Longacre's "French Head" design that was used on Judd 237-238 among others. Saul Teichman notes: "(he has always) questioned whether this was designed by Longacre or Paquet as the 1859 half dollar patterns used Paquet's punches in the legend 'United States of America'. A more finished die trial, lacking just the date, is also known and is listed as JA1859-3/P3215." Only two or three pieces are believed known: the Judd plate coin, the Cox coin, and the Lenox Lohr piece. This is not the Judd plate coin as it lacks the vertical die crack. So, it must be either the Cox or Lohr piece, but neither catalog has a photo. Saul Teichman tells us that this piece is the Lohr coin, and that the Cox specimen is now in the Smithsonian. The surfaces are light gray overall with a few dabs of darker gray here and there. The impression is strong, and there are numerous small to medium sized handling marks present. The back appears to have been mounted at one time on cardboard with most of that side still covered with the remnants.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
