1859 H10C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. V-4. A new obverse hub was introduced into the Seated Half Dime series in 1859 that resulted in the creation of an important one-year type. The diagnostics of the new obverse include: 1. Lower relief. 2. Sharper points to the stars and hollow centers. 3. Liberty's arms are slimmer. 4. The Liberty cap is smaller. 5. The word LIBERTY on the ribbon over the shield is larger. 6. The base of Liberty's rock is less irregular and it projects beyond the foot.Writing in 1977, Walter Breen (Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977) reports only two die marriages for the proof 1859 Half Dime: V-1 with repunching on the base of the first, third, and final digits in the date and V-2 with repunching on the base of the 18 in the date. The present example, however, displays distinct repunching on the base of all four digits in the date. Al Blythe (The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes, 1992) suggests that V-4 may be a very early die state of either V-1 or V-3 before some of the repunching was removed by repolishing. We subscribe to this theory, and we also believe that this lovely Superb Gem from the Kaufman Collection was one of the first proof Half Dimes produced in 1859. The strike is razor sharp in all areas, and the fields shimmer with glassy reflectivity beneath rich cobalt-blue, reddish-russet, and champagne-gray target toning. There is not a single bothersome contact mark or hairline, although pedigree concerns compel us to mention a small planchet void (as struck) in the obverse field at Liberty's left (facing) hand. A mere 60-75 proof 1859 Seated Half Dimes are believed extant, the majority of which grade no finer than PR65. Population: 7 in 67, only one is finer (10/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
