Modified by Anthony C. Paquet, the obverse that made its debut this year exhibits larger stars with hollow centers. Liberty's figure is also taller with some light refinements. The Mint utilized this obverse design on only one regular issue in the Seated Half Dime series, the 1859-P, as well as on the transitional issues of 1859 and 1860.
What is perhaps more widely known to collectors is the status of the 1859 as the final P-mint Seated Half Dime of the Stars Obverse, Legend Reverse type. With a respectable original mintage of 340,000 pieces, the business strike of this issue is one of the more common dates in the series from the standpoint of total number of coins extant. The proofs, however, are scarce-to-rare depending on the level of surface preservation.
We as a hobby are somewhat ignorant on the actual rarity of the proof 1859 Half Dime. After all, federal records do not list a mintage figure for this date. As for total number of coins extant, all we have to go on are estimates such as that listed in Breen's 1977 Encyclopedia ("evidently less than 100 and probably less than 60") and certified population data. One thing is clear from a perusal of the latter: the rarity of the proof 1859 Half Dime increases steadily with grade with the finest five specimens known to NGC being at the PR67 level (2/03).
One of, if not the most beautiful representative of this elusive issue that this cataloger has handled, the originally toned surfaces display a target-like distribution of gold, cobalt-blue, crimson, and orange-gray colors from the rims toward the centers. Strong reflectivity is evident under a light, but no angles reveal any grade-limiting blemishes. Sharply impressed throughout, and worthy of a premium bid.
From the Philip Kaufman Collection.

Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions

Date

Service

Price

09/26/1998

NGC

$9,200.00

<FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
