1859 G$1 PR64 Deep Cameo NGC. Official Mint records in 1859 G$1 PR64 Deep Cameo NGC. Official Mint records indicate that 80 proof Gold Dollars were produced in 1859. We have no reason to doubt this figure, but we find it highly unlikely that all 80 pieces were actually sold to collectors. As with proof issues of virtually all other denominations produced in 1859, the Gold Dollar had a limited distribution that led to the destruction of many unsold examples. Fewer than half of the original mintage is thought to have left the Mint. Estimates on the number of survivors in today's hobby vary: Breen (1988) says 12-15 pieces; Akers (1988) estimates as many of 20 specimens; NGC and PCGS combined (11/04) have seen 20 examples with both brilliant and cameoed finishes.
This is only the third proof 1859 Gold Dollar that we have handled over the past decade, and it is the second with an Ultra Cameo designation. A later, repolished die state, the diagnostic repunching on the date is only readily evident on the first digit. Both sides are aglow in yellow-gold color that yields to a coal-black appearance in the fields at indirect light angles. The devices are fully struck up and richly frosted. An as struck planchet streak is seen in the left obverse field from the N in UNITED, and striations (also as produced) are most prevalent in the reverse field around the 1 in the denomination. Perhaps needless to say for a near-Gem Ultra Cameo proof gold coin, the eye appeal is extraordinary.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:30394
