<B>(1859) Dime Obverse Die Trial, J-A 1859-1, Pollock-3206, Unique (?) MS64 Red and Brown NGC.</B></I> Obverse die trial of Longacre's "French Head" of Liberty, as seen on the pattern half dollars from this year. Struck without a collar, slightly off center, and uniface. Much of the original mint luster remains with slight mellowing on the obverse. The reverse is a uniform brown color.<BR> This piece has apparently been off the market for many years. The USPatterns.com website speculates that this and the white metal die trial are one and the same. Saul Teichman explains: "With regard to JA1859-1, P3206, there is only one piece, the one you are offering--there is no P3203 in white metal. For the first five editions of Judd, this piece was described as a half dime in white metal. When the sixth edition was edited, an attempt was made to add information from Don Taxay's 1976 <I>Catalog & Encyclopedia of US Coins.</B></I> This was not always done successfully. The piece you are offering was correctly pedigreed and listed in Taxay, there as a dime trial in copper, but, instead of correcting the original entry in Judd, a second entry for this piece was added. Pollock then using Judd as a guide for his book also created two items for this, P3203 for the original incorrect entry and P3206 which is the correct one from Taxay and the correct attribution.
